monthly data allowance

Services have a monthly data allowance in GigaBytes (GB).

1 GB is equal to 1024 MegaBytes (1024 MB).

Data usage is worked out by adding together everything that is downloaded and uploaded on the broadband connection. You can use the calculator below to get an idea of what's right for you.

Going over the limit

Usage above the allowance in any month will be charged according to how much extra data has been used.

BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer provides online access to BBC TV and Radio programmes. It has proved very popular.

It is a peer-to-peer service, which means that unless you change the default settings, your broadband connection is being used both to download data for the programme you want to watch or listen to, and to upload data to help the service work. This will consume a lot of your data allowance.

If you install and use iPlayer we strongly recommend that you keep an eye on your usage for the first couple of months. For more information about iPlayer see the BBC website.

As a rule of thumb 30 minute TV programmes on iPlayer are often around 300Mb in size, which could take around 500Mb of your bandwidth to watch as a stream (i.e. to watch 'live', without downloading).
