broadband speeds
Saver Packages
Our Anytime Saver and Evening & Weekend Saver packages are on an LLU network, and there are plans to provide faster speeds with these services. For now though the same guidelines apply.
'Home Broadband' and other packages
The fastest download speed possible on the BT network is 8Mbps (Megabits per second).
The fastest upload speed you can get is 448Kbps (Kilobits per second).
What speed you get will however depend on a number of factors, including distance from the local exchange,
the quality of the cabling and your internal wiring, and your equipment.
The BT guidelines are that:
- actual download speeds will be no higher than 7.15Mbps
- 78% of customers will achieve download speeds of 4Mbps and above
- Fluctuation in line speed is expected to occur within the first 10 days of service whilst your line
speed adapts to the maximum it can reliably support
- It is likely that speeds of no greater than 2Mbps will be achieved at peak usage times
The name BT gives to the new generation of broadband is 'ADSL Max'.
Watch this 5-minute video for an overview of what
ADSL Max is and what it will mean to you (you'll need broadband to watch it!).
Equipment
With older equipment your broadband will still work, but may not be able to take advantage of faster speeds.
As a rule of thumb most recent routers are ok and most modems are not.
We always recommend using a router anyway because of the increased security.
Plus for the connection between
your equipment and your computer, an ethernet connection (router) is generally faster than USB (modem).
